Rainforest Challenge: Jungle fever hits Hungary & Czech Republic.

For Hungarian off-road champion Csaba Boros and his co-driver Gabor Boros (not related), their entry to Rainforest Challenge (RFC) will also be the first time that they will tackle the hot tropical jungle. Their numerous 4x4 exploits in trophy type events on home turf have earned them a fierce reputation: "I wanted to go last year but was not satisfied with my preparation; however, this year I am ready", said Csaba at Domonyvolgy Erdokertes, an ex-military off-road ground at the outskirts of Budapest. They will be coming in an UAZ proto 1.9 vw, their vehicle of choice equipped with reinforced suspensions.

However, apart from a good vehicle, finding a navigator trained in recovery techniques and the use of electrical and mechanical winch is a must. "He must also be in good physical and psychological conditions as well as mechanically inclined for emergency repairs in the jungle. Gabor is such a man," concluded Csaba. With both hardware and software ready in the various trial runs, they are confident to tackle the RFC.

"Even though we had Hungarian touring adventurers for the past two years, it was only last year that the first competitor team with their own vehicle made it to RFC," commented Gog Laszlo from 4x4 Magazin. This year will see the biggest contingent from Hungary, up to four competitor teams and five touring adventurers making a total of thirteen participants. "Some of the spouses and friends will join them at the end of the event for a tropical holiday," he added.

Apart from the champions, the other participants will be Sandor Fazekas, Attila Nagy, Csaba Salamon, Gyorgy Baranyai, Arpad Babinyecz, Attila Molnar and Laszlo Nagy coming in their respective "battle wagons" comprising of Land Rover Defender, Mercedes G and Nissan Patrol.

Meanwhile in neighbouring Czech Republic, "jungle fever" is also very high. At the Hummer Outdoor Centre in Prague, the enthusiasts gathered for the night’s briefing to hear the latest news. "All Czech enthusiasts have been informed that going to the RFC is very different experience from any European competition events that they have been," said Mila Janacek the owner and publisher of Off-Road. "The terrain in the jungle is awesome and ever changing, and so they must also be fully adaptable mentally and physically. An afternoon rain can disrupt the route, turn campsites into a quagmire and cause great misery in morale," added Jan Percl (Honza) from Realvideo, a partner of Off-Road relating their experience during the heavy deluge two years ago in Sg (river) Selai.

With first hand experience and video documentaries to show, the Czech off-road enthusiasts were given practical tips and advices for their foray into RFC. "This year we shall have touring adventurers. They will be learning more about the event by being there themselves, then they will be better prepared for next year," said Mila Janacek.

At the Hummer Centre the enthusiasts were also given some practical advice on how to build a reliable vehicle, common problems encountered, use of correct winching technique for both mechanical and electrical types as well as some jungle survival tips.

The Slovaks meanwhile are equally thrilled to come thanks to the spillover effect from their Czech brothers. The Slovak Off-Road came for the evening briefing. They are now in the midst of preparing a press vehicle to come for the experience.

From this visit to Hungary and Czech Republic, watch out for the Central Europeans this year. The participants will comprise from enthusiasts in Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Czech Rep and Slovakia, making this year’s entry to RFC the year of the Central Europeans.

Special thanks to 4x4 Magazin (Hungary), Off Road Association Hungary, Gog Laszlo, Annamarie, Szanto Lajosand Vinkovics Emilia. Off Road Czech & Slovak, Realvideo, Mila Janacek, Jan Percl (Honza) and Dasha Prochazkova.
