ABSA 2006: Changes to Sun City 400 Route

Changes to the route for the Sun City 400, round six of the South African Absa Off Road Championship on September 29 and 30 will, say the organisers, provide competitors and spectators with a pleasant surprise. After a 45 kilometre prologue on September 29 to determine start positions, the race route on September 30 will be made up of two 193 kilometre loops. These will include a considerable amount of new terrain taking in a number of river crossings, rocky sections and virgin veld.

"The changes we have made will provide for a more interesting and tougher route," said Adri Roets of organising club Off Road SA. "Although it is a tougher route we think it fair, and it is going to bring the best out of competitors. The way the route is laid out also provides for a great number of spectator points. All of these will be easily accessible with most of them within easy reach of the start and finish at the Sun City resort." The main route will take competitors to Mogwasi and run alongside the Thabazimbi road for long stretches. This provides for good spectating with some fast sections.

The route then swings towards Maile and Tsitsing before heading back to the start/finish and designated service point at the Sun City Sports and Recreation Club. There are five designated spectator points on the prologue, and no fewer than 13 on the route proper.

"The prologue spectator points are all within 20 kilometres of the start and finish, and on the main route are all within a 50 kilometre radius of Sun City," said Roets. "This is going to make for good spectating and with Sun City easily accessible we are expecting a big turnout of enthusiasts. There will be plenty of refreshments available at the Sun City Sport and Recreation Club, and we are looking forward to a very competitive race."

The prologue will start at 13h00 on September 29 and the race at 08h00 on September 30, with the lead cars expected back at the finish at approximately 14h30. Spectator guides will be available at Ford, Nissan and Toyota Dealers in Rustenburg, Sun City hotels and at the start and finish.
