ABSA 2006: Cox/Ter Stege named as Toyota Dealer 400 winners

South African champions Alfie Cox and Hennie Ter Stege, from the Motorite BAT team, have been named as winners of the Toyota Dealer 400, the penultimate round of the Absa Off Road Championship, in Mpumalanga on October 27 and 28.
This follows a Motorsport South Africa appeal court hearing this week after a controversial finish to the Special Vehicle category in the Mpumalanga race. In a dramatic finish Gary Bertholdt and Henry Kirstein, in the Atlas Copco Porter, were named as winners of the event.
Cox and Ter Stege and their Motorite BAT team-mates, Evan Hutchison and Achim Bergmann, were placed second and third. Race officials, however, penalised the Atlas Copco crew for an incorrect start time on the third and final loop of the race, and dropped them to third behind the two Motorite BAT crews.
Bertholdt and Kirstein protested the decision and were reinstated as winners by the stewards of the meeting. The Motorite team then appealed against the decision by the stewards, with the MSA appeal court upholding the appeal.
The appeal court decision saw Cox and Ter Stege reinstalled as winners, by a narrow 13 seconds, ahead of Hutchison and Bergmann. Bertholdt and Kirstein were placed third, a further 48 seconds in arrears.
The outcome of the appeal, however, has not affected the result of the Special Vehicle or Class A championships. Cox and Ter Stege, whether they were placed first or second on the Toyota Dealer 400, clinched the titles in Mpumalanga.
The appeal court decision is a boost for the Motorite BAT team on the eve of the Ford Carnival City 400, the final event of the season, this weekend. It also adds a little extra needle to the race with little love likely to be lost between Bertholdt and Kirstein and the Motorite crews.
The Ford Carnival City 400 will start on Friday with a 70 kilometre prologue, from 11h30, to determine start positions for the race proper. The race will start at 08h00 on Saturday with competitors in the Special Vehicle and Production vehicle categories tackling two loops of approximately 180 kilometres.
The start/finish and designated service point are all situated at the Carnival City complex. The route is spectator friendly with numerous viewing points within easy access from Carnival City.
