ABSA 2006: Good viewing on Lesotho Sun 400.

Spectators will be well catered for on the Lesotho Sun 400, round five of the Absa Off Road Championship, on September 1 and 2. Both the prologue on September 1 and the race proper the next day have a number of spectator points. These are also easily accessible on good roads.

To reach the start of the prologue, which will determine start positions for the main race. Turn left onto the Maseru by-pass from Pope’s Podium. From the overhead pedestrian bridge continue for 4,42 kilometres to the third traffic circle.

At the traffic circle take the right hand feeder road, which is marked Prologue in red dayglo paint. Continue along this road for eight kilometers to the start of the prologue. There are three good spectator points along the prologue route. To reach the first point follow the tar road for 11,2 kilometres with the race route visible from the top of the mountain.

The third spectator point is easy to find and you travel 2.95 kilometres further along the same road. At the T Junction with the Mantsebo Road turn left. This is a crossing point for the race with limited parking. To reach the final prologue point turn back and head south. Soon after Mantsebo turn left at the signpost to Ha Mafoka. The race route runs parallel to the road with good viewing.

The first spectator point on race day is reached by taking the road back to Maseru from the start at Matsieng. At the T Junction with the Main 1 South turn left at the sign to Mafeteng and after 4,6 kilometres the route crosses the road. To reach the second spectator point continue to travel south with the main road for 10,7 kilometres. The race route runs close to the road and there is good viewing.

For the third spectator point return to the first viewing point, and then turn left at the sign to Rothe/Ha Makintane. Continue along this road for 15 kilometres until you reach St Peter Claver, which is a crossing point for the race. Access to the fourth spectator point is also reached from spectator point one. Turn left and head towards Maseru with the spectator point 10 kilometres along this road.

To reach the fifth spectator point, approximately eight kilometers from point four, head back to the start at Matsieng. The race can be followed along the tar road. The final spectator point is at the restart after the decontrol at the designated service point. This is two kilometers from the DSP.
