Baja Spain: Jozel Sykora wins the Baja Spain Aragon 2006

| |
| It wasn’t expected but the veteran Slovak rider Jozel Sykora has shown that experience is always an advantage and won the first Baja he has ran. Riding a Mitsubishi Pajero and keeping an enviable regularity he has achieved the victory. In the last leg of the race, 122km ran today, the winner has been the Portuguese Carlos Sousa with his Volkswagen, as expected. He has been 4min ahead Sykora, but the Slovak with his son as co driver has ran calmed due to the 13 min advantage he won yesterday.
Sousa has been his main rival and also one of the favourite riders. He became leader yesterday as Marc Blazquez abandoned the race due to a mechanical problem, but Sousa couldn’t keep the first place because of a mistake of his co driver in one of the check points.
The podium has been completed by the Italian Pier Paolo Larini, who drives the Baja since 1989. The first classified Spanish rider has been Francesc Tremens, who has done a really regular race and has achieved a sixth place and a victory in the Spanish Trophy as well as in the T2 class. The victory in trucks has been unsurprisingly for David Oliveras with a Mercedes.
Quotes of the protagonists
Isidre Esteve: "I’m very happy of the result I’ve reached. Tired but very satisfied because it has been a hard and difficult race. This Baja has been complicated because, as we expected, we had some problems at yesterday’s leg. But today things have gone much better and I haven’t have problems to win the last leg."
José Manuel Pellicer: "It was imposible to win Esteve, he rode very fast and I had to resign myself to keep the second place. After three times going by, the terrain was in really bad conditions".
Jordi Viladoms: "I’m very happy to be on the podium because I think it’s a good result. Furthermore this Baja gave me more experience for the next ones, to know about the race and to see how the terrain brakes. It has been a positive experience".
Jozel Sykora: "We’re completely satisfied because we didn’t expect this victory. The race has been really hard and the heat made it more difficult. The car worked well and that’s why today I could keep the advantage that I won yesterday."
Carlos Sousa: "Today we have done well but yesterday’s mistake costs us the victory. We have done our best but sometimes things like that can happen and after loosing nearly 30 min due to the mistake I couldn’t make the time up today and I’ve finished the race really tired."
