Event for Mercedes-Benz 100th 4wd anniversary in Abu Dhabi

| |
| Mercedes-Benz is celebrating its 100th anniversary of the first all-wheel drive Mercedes automobile this year and Emirates Motor Company (EMC), the exclusive dealers for the brand in Abu Dhabi, held a special SUV event last week to mark the occasion. The event gave customers as well as prospective converts to the brand a chance to experience the on- and off-road capabilities of some of the brand’s SUV line-up - in this case the ML-Class and GL-Class vehicles were on hand to demonstrate their prowess.
Professional drivers took participating customers through a series of manoeuvres on a specially constructed track to display the off-road tackling proficiency of these SUV’s. The ML and GL demonstrator models were both equipped with the optional adjustable suspension that could be raised or lowered at the touch of a button.
After witnessing the rigours that these vehicles were put through, we would strongly advise drivers of ML’s and GL’s without this feature or the optional off-road package not to try such stunts with their vehicles as such manoeuvres could seriously damage your vehicle (plus your ego!) and put a hole right through your pocket.
"Mercedes-Benz invented the four-wheel drive vehicle 100 years ago and we want to demonstrate the capabilities of the latest range of all-wheel drive vehicles from the world’s largest manufacturer of luxury vehicles," said Monser Al Rifai, General Manager, EMC. "We wanted it to be a fun day to give our customers the opportunity to reach the limits of our SUV’s in a controlled environment."
The off-road course also included a hill-climb that displayed the DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation) feature to very good extent. Turning on the DSR control while descending a hill, the SUV lets you concentrate on the steering part rather than powering the SUV. The speed of the descent can be adjusted from a mere 4kmph to 18kmph via the cruise control, depending on the terrain. With the suspension setting set to the max, the ML as well as the GL exhibited some remarkable approach and departure angles through the entire off-road tackling course.
Having proved the SUV’s prowess in the off-road course, the two SUVs were put through their paces on a handling track with the suspension set to sport mode. Needless to say, both vehicles exhibited gentleman-like behaviour despite some serious efforts from the drivers.
