Pharaons 2006: Lavieille one stage away from the World-Title.

This sixth and penultimate leg of the Pharaons Rally between Siwa and Baharija was a long one for the French Nissan-Driver Christian Lavieille and Arnaud Debron. The 430-km timed sector was physically tiring, as it took place under bright sunshine. Applying a race management strategy which placed the emphasis on prudence, Team Nissan Aventure only conceded five minutes to their main rival in the T2 category.
Today´s special stage, between Siwa and Baharija, was no fewer than 430 km long, and was quite possibly the hottest stage in terms of temperature for this Egyptian event. One stage from the finish line, each kilometer seemed twice as long for Christian Lavieille: "It was very long today. We had good fun with Giacomo Vismara´s truck (classified 9th overall). It was an amusing little battle, as we kept on overtaking each other. In the rough sections, we had a clear advantage, but when it got faster, we were quite simply left behind. After the service park at CP2, it became a lot less amusing. We were going through very soft saline lakes, where our top speed was never over 90km/h. It was really very long, but the longest day of all for us will be tomorrow!"
Arnaud Debron, who found today´s heat tiring, also enjoyed the short interlude with Giacomo Vismara´s truck: "I was cooking in the heat throughout today´s stage. It was really very hot, and the day has seemed very long. It´s the first time I´ve been racing directly up against a truck, it was great! After plenty of overtaking depending on the terrain, we ended up by winning! There is just one stage to come, tomorrow, which may be the worst yet?"
André Dessoude is particularly satisfied with his crew, and with the professionalism of his driver: "Christian drove a wise race, and is following the instructions to avoid stress on the Pathfinder and to manage his lead in the category to the letter. Scoring points towards the title is the main ojective, and Christian is acting with that in mind. Tomorrow´s special stage will be shorter, 200 km, but that is when they are going to have to take the most care, in that final straight."
Tomorrow, between Baharija and Cairo, where the finish of the rally will take place, the competitors will face 116 km of liaison before a 208 km timed stage, finishing at the podium installed at the foot of the Sphinx. Up until CP1, the competitors will go along a fast, sandy wadi, quite pleasant to drive. Then the trail straightens out, very fast with a few steps that will be quite dangerous to negotiate. At the 175.46 km point, they will cross the final dune of the Pharaohs 2006 - closely followed by the finish line in Cairo, and the podium close to the Giza Pyramids.
