Pharaons 2006: What they said after stage 5

Motos

David Casteu (F), KTM 660: "Finally, I have committed the same mistake as the leading group, except that I have realised it before them. It has allowed me to pass in front of them and then to trail the rest of the day, taking back four minutes to the group of Marc Coma and Carlo De Gavardo in the meantime. A good operation, even if I am almost certain that I won’t probably be able to celebrate the world title here in Egypt."

Francisco Lopez (CHI), Honda 450: "It is not because I am finishing second that I can say that this has been my best stage in Africa. I really appreciated it. I took benefit from the navigational work of David Casteu. But as technically as for the beauty of the landscape, I really enjoyed this stage."

Carlo De Gavardo (CHI), KTM 660 Rally: "No doubt that I have ridden some 10 kilometres more than required in this stage, which are costing me almost fifteen minutes in the end. Indeed, I am still thirty minutes behind Viladoms, but no matter, I will attack during the two stages left and tempt everything."

Cars & Trucks

Sergey Shmakov (RUS), Buggy Zil: "I didn’t know that Monterde was suffering some problems. We managed a perfect stage, without any trouble. At the finish line, the satisfaction is double. Now we have the opportunity to manage our advance in order to win this rally and then celebrate our world title, on Monday, in the magnificent plateau of Gizah."

Sandor Kis (HU), Nissan Pickup 06: "It has been an excellent stage for us. Without any worry. All worked perfectly, showing the potential of our new car, with the Dakar in sight. Unfortunately, our clutch problems from the first day have cost us a lot of time."

Prisca Taruffi (I), Nissan Navara: "26km before the finish line, our car stuck inclined in a basin and the engine did’t start anymore. We had to wait for another competitor to help us to put the car on the right position before to be able to start again."

Jose Luis Monterde (E), BMW X5: "The stage started really bad with two punctured tires. Afterwards, just before CP1, the gear-box broke-up. The mechanics changed it, but we were notmore lucky with the second one! We had to conduct this operation a second time, which made us waste a lot of time. Further, the transmission shown also some weaknesses, forcing us to continue with only two wheels driving. We are still 3rd on the overall classification, a small consolation but we will take the opportunity to finish our preparation for the Dakar within the next two stages left."

Giacomo Vismara (I), Iveco: "We have driven at a high pace and we frightened us few times, fortunately without consequences, in the contrary to some other trucks. That is why we will continue a bit more carefully during the next last stages."
