Pharaons 2006: What they said after the finish in Cairo.

| |
| Jacky Ickx (B), Organisator : "We have lived an exceptional 9th edition with great winners, but also three world titles that have been awarded here, after the arrival in Cairo. I can only regret once more the unfair decision of the FIA to arbitrary exclude the 2007 edition from the World Cup. Alike we have shown it again this year, we are the most important event in terms of number of participants after the Dakar. That’s why, by passion for this discipline and for the competitors who honour us by coming back every year more numerous, we are well decided to pursue our way. Starting from next year, with a 10th edition that will reserve some nice surprises."
Motos
Marc Coma (E), KTM 660 Rally: "I am particularly happy with this victory because Egypt is, according to me, the most beautiful event of the calendar, the closest to the Dakar. I didn’t only managed a good race, but I also had the chance to get more familiar to my new KTM and to exercise my navigation skills, ending a long and successful season."
Pal Anders Ullevalseter (N), KTM 660 Rally: "My problem always is to start a rally on a too slow pace. Nonetheless, I am very satisfied from the rally in general and from my performance, which is much more worth as my victory in 2004, obtained under dramatic conditions."
Jean De Azevedo (BR), KTM 660 Rally: "It is my first participation in the Pharaons Rally and I have noticed that it is an excellent preparation stage to the Dakar. That is why I am so happy to finish on the podium. I have learned a lot in terms of navigation with road book and about the pace to adopt on stages with particularly varying grounds."
David Casteu (F), KTM 660: "Except for the first stage, I had a perfect rally. But like Fabrizio (Meoni) used to say, we always have to learn, even from the bad experiences. However, I have often made the trail and I have progressed a lot in navigation. Of course, I would have appreciated to celebrate my world title here in Egypt where I have been competing with my former bike. In Dubai, for which I will get my new KTM, I will need only three points to clinch victory."
Francisco Lopez (CHI), Honda 450: "I have started this championship to learn more about the African soil. And I end up with a world title. This season is a real fairy tale!"
Cars and Trucks
Sergey Shmakov (RUS), Buggy Zil : "With our 15 minutes of penalty after our incident from yesterday, and having suffered some technical problems at the beginning of the final stage, we can say that we had a rather tough end of rally. But what really matters is that we have won here, and above all, the FIA World Cup which was our main objective this season. It has been a beautiful rally, I promise that I will be back!"
Paolo Nobre (BR), X-Raid BMW X5: "For me, this second place is equal to a victory. This was my first participation here in Egypt, and the only objective was to finish. Then, finishing 2nd, 9 minutes behind the winner is more than expected! We didn’t have any trouble, the road book was perfect and the specials beautiful and technically varying. Perfect as preparation for the Dakar."
Jose Luis Monterde (E), BMW X5: "We came here to win and, sincerely, I think that we had the potential to achieve our goal. From this point of view, I can only be disappointed. I would like to give a particular thank to the organization for the very good job they have done and the high quality of their road book. Finally, this event has allowed us to continue our preparation for the Dakar and to learn all the positive and negative points of our car."
Christian Lavieille (F), Nissan Pathfinder: "I am very happy to hold the world title now and very satisfied from this season in T2 category with the Team Dessoude Nissan France. It is the school of the wisdom. Ideal to learn how to read properly the ground, and how to manage the equipment."
